Cultural Event # 4 Cat Stevens

May 7, 2008 / by acorchado

When asking people if they have ever heard the name cat Stevens most people just give a shrug of the shoulders or say, “ya, wasn’t he a singer or something or wasn’t he a terrorist”? The truth is people really don’t know to much about this man and the life that he has lived. His story has a deep meaning that that was heard through his songs that millions of people enjoyed back in the 60’s, 70’s as well as today. Today he is known as Yusuf Islam after reverting back to his Islamic faith on Dec 23, 1977.

In order to find out more about this man I visited his official website www.catstevens.com. Upon visiting this site I was overwhelmed by the detail and artistry of his page. This site is not like any other site that I have been to. It is as though you are walking into someone’s home and looking through their things. There is a couch, pictures, books, a TV and other icons that you can point to and provide you with a small detail about his life or things that he has done or accomplished. They way things are set up capture your attention and make you want to read more about the life that this man lived.

He put out Footsteps in the light , a compilation of his works from 1981 to 2006. This album includes a 24 page booklet of lyrics and comments by Yusuf on the reasons for recording each track. He seems so put his heart and soul into his music and each song holds its own meaning. Something that I thought was very interesting on his page under Mr. Ho Ho’s Faq was him talking about how many things he has been accused of saying and doing that aren’t true. And that these lies led people to think that he is connected to causes he doesn’t believe in. His web site doesn’t go into detail about what those issues but one can only assume that he has been falsely connected to terrorist groups because of his religious conversion. In fact, he is a very giving and kind person. Just because someone has the same religious beliefs doesn’t mean that they are terrorists. He chose to convert because it made him feel better about himself. Don’t we all do things to make ourselves feel better? Yes, and know one can deny it!

I urge everyone to take at look at his website. There are so many things that you can look at and music you can download. To be honest some of it is quit catchy.
